Featured Event:  Maple Syrup Demonstration Days - 2018

On April 7, 2018 we had our Maple Syrup Demonstration Day in the park. The Friends of Maplewood were on hand to tell the story of how maple syrup is made, from the tree to the table. Activities and demonstrations took place throughout the day, including:

  • How to identify a maple tree in the spring before leaves.
  • How to tap a tree.
  • Examples of different ways to collect sap.
  • Visiting the new sugar shack and to see how the evaporator works.
  • How the Native Americans and early settlers cooked their maple sap.
  • Horse drawn wagon rides.
  • Samples of maple syrup on top of ice cream.
  • Finding hidden maple leaves by using a GPS.
  • Hikes around Cataract Lake or to the top of Hallaway Hill.

This Spring we also demonstrated how to make maple syrup to groups of school children that visited the park.
